Picture Graphs

Learning to use a Picture Graph is an easy way for students to visually organize data. Amazing lessons can be thought of when students collect their own data and put them into a graph by drawing their own pictures or by using little cut outs. My favorite was when my teacher used small candies to represent the data. Obviously I loved the candy but I still remember that lesson today and helping children learn sometimes calls for creative thinking.

Kids will go from picture graphs to bar graphs and they need to know how to represent a data set with as many as four categories. I think kids this age can do more but it is the concept of using the data that is important.

There are many ways you can use our video. One way that we have liked using it is by showing part of the video and then pausing it and asking the students to answer some of the questions at the end.

Many kids can form a picture graph but if you have some kids that are struggling have them watch the video and as they count the pencils ask them how many pictures they should have. This can help get their interest activated. (or you can just offer candy – Just kidding)
