Children need to play with money to help them understand how it is utilized. Also, playing with money lends well to math problems. Having a student give correct change for an item is a much needed skill and can be learned well through visual problems. Students can also utilize their own money to solve each problem if they are more tactile learners. An important concept that comes across during these activities is that bigger doesn’t always mean higher value. For example, a nickel is larger than a dime, but certainly not worth more. Playing with coins to give exact change helps solidify this concept.
We currently have two videos for second grade on money and they both help students learn the values and solve real world problems like giving correct change. Through learning these word problems in the video students get a better understanding of coin values and how to solve word problems.
If you have any ideas of videos to make please go to the Contact. Thank you.
