Math is more than numbers. Math skills help students solve real world problems. This is why it is so beneficial to utilize story problems when dealing with addition and regrouping. Students understand concepts such as 32 kids in a class. They also understand ten blocks and one blocks because they can physically touch them and manipulate them to solve different problems. Each child is different and some will learn better with visuals while others are hands-on and need the actual place value blocks. The key as a teacher and parent is to give each and every student the best opportunity and resources to help them obtain the skills to solve real world problems.
