Bar Graphs
Learning Bar Graphs in 2nd grade can be fun, especially when students get to collect their own data. In our bar graph video we teach how to make a bar graph and how to solve a few problems with the graph we have made. When learning about bar graphs we have found that it helps students the most when they see how to create a bar graph and that will in turn help them understand how to interpret other bar graphs.
One amazing thing to do is to have the students watch the video and pause if needed to give them time to think or teach a spot we might have missed. Once the video is done have them use the bar graph worksheet to make their own bar graph by collecting data (tally marks) on the back of the paper. Have them ask 6 people what their favorite color is between Red, Orange, Green and Yellow. Once they have their data collected they can then go back to their seats and color in the data on the other side of the paper where the bar graph is. Students will learn as they go about doing this activity. (caution – this could cause lots of noise so maybe tell them they have to do it silently or at their own tables)
